How to Create a High Bun On Natural Hair

Hello,

Once again I have taken down my sew-in and decided to share with you another one of my favorite natural hair styles…. A TOP BUN!  This is the same hairstyle that I wore in my I Dream of Green fashion post! Let’s get started!

Things You May Need:
 1. A strip of a Satin Scarf
2. Styling Creme of Choice
3. Gel or Edge Control of Choice
4. Water
5. Bobby Pins
6. Soft Bristle Brush
Just as I did in my How I Refresh My Twistout post, I am starting this style with a twist out that has expanded beyond comprehension. I then gather all the tools needed to achieve the bun.
First I flip my head over, take the strip of satin scarf and tie it around my head once. This strip of satin will be used at my elastic tie. It smooths my hair down and keeps my ponytail in place while allowing me to control how tight the ponytail is around my hair.

Next, I flip my head back up and slowly pull the string tight until my ponytail is sitting where I want it to be. Once I’m satisfied with the positioning of the ponytail I wrap the remainder of the satin scarf around and tie it so that it doesn’t show.
After that, I simply take portions of my ponytail and pin it in the form of a bun using the bobby pins pictured above.

To smooth my hair and edges I start by applying water to my hands and then smoothing my hands over my hair. I then take my Shea Butter mix and apply that to my hair and a bit of Eco Styler Gel to my edges and smooth them down with a soft bristle brush.

I tie down my edges for a few minutes and then….TADA !!!! PERFECT BUN!!!

There you have it! A simple way to achieve the perfect bun with no de-tangling required! The styling creme or gel you use is completely up to you but I recommend using products without alcohol in them as it’s rather drying to the hair! Just in case you are a visual learner, as in you like to see things happen in video versus picture, I recommend watching Fusion of Culture’s video tutorial on making a high bun!

Speaking of videos…is that something that you would prefer to go along with my hair posts? If so, please comment down below. Next week’s post will be more along the lanes of inspiration so I hope to see you here again! If you have any questions please leave it below in the comment section and don’t forget to subscribe! Thank you for visiting!

Sincerely,

Nate

I would’ve never thought to use shea better to help lay down edges. I am transitioning so I currently have weave in, however when I wear my natural hair it’s always a struggle especially my edges. Yes, please share videos and more protective styles. Thanks for sharing!
